ThanksGifting Edition

As Thanksgiving approaches, we often think about gratitude, family, and sharing what we have. ThanksGifting builds on that spirit by reminding us that the best gifts are not bought or wrapped. They are the moments we give through kindness, listening, and presence. Gifting is a living form of thanks, a way to show appreciation not just with words but through genuine connection. This season, let’s expand the table by noticing those around us, giving time, attention, and encouragement.

Gifting Story: The Gifter becomes the Giftee

I recently found myself in the waiting room at a window tinting shop. Across from me in the spacious waiting room was another man who was looking out the window. I commented “these guys do great work, I had them do my windows over 10 years ago” he concurred and a nice Gifting session began where I learned many interesting things about his past as a law enforcement officer and soon to be retired tour guide in Aruba…

At one point in the conversation I felt like I ran out of easy conversation topics and looked over to see how the shop was doing on my car. He then asked me “what’s it like to photograph events for a living?” and so started a new direction of the conversation where I became the Giftee. It reminds me that when we lead with generosity and curiosity it is often natural for others to share that Gift back with us. When we parted ways we shook hands and I felt like a genuine connection had been made that altered both of our days.

The Power of Listening

“Tell me more about…” & “What’s it like…”

Phrases like “tell me more about” and “what’s it like” are great ways to start a gifting conversation because they naturally invite someone to open up. They signal curiosity, interest, and a desire to understand the other person’s world. These questions also leave plenty of room for feelings, stories, and nuance, which makes the conversation warmer and more connected.

Featured Gifter (DeRahn Johnson)

DeRahn Johnson is regarded as a solid friend for his ability to hold space and bring real curiosity to the people around him. Anyone who knows him will tell you he is thoughtful, present, and steady. Anyone meeting him for the first time feels seen… 

His biggest influences are JIT (Just In Time) and the Coach Approach to mentoring. These shaped his belief that we can erase hierarchy, especially when working with foster youth. Instead of telling people what to do, he helps them connect to their own inner wisdom. His style is grounded in active listening and the intention to reflect what someone shared so they feel understood.

What gifting means to him
For DeRahn, gifting is the practice of staying open and curious without trying to impress or fix anything. He says the best gifting happens when it does not feel like gifting at all. It simply feels like being with someone without judgement.

Where he gifts the most
He brings gifting most naturally into his work with clients as a nutritionist and health coach. He uses nonjudgmental curiosity to build rapport and trust. He believes the gift is in helping someone hear themselves more clearly.

One participant said they frequented the Connection Corner to make several new friends they plan to stay in touch with. Maybe set up a Connection Corner where you live.
